Lucy in the Sky with Diamonds

So, Shae checked in for pre-op at 11:30 this morning, and was wheeled away into surgery at 3:35 this afternoon. Pre-op started with blood pressure, an oxygen tank, an iv, and of course all the other boring medical history questions that get asked.

But, the best part was when Shae had to get her blood drawn for a PRP. A PRP is when you get 100cc's of blood taken out (100cc for each hip), and then it gets spinned through a center-fuse, where they only keep the good blood platelets, and then just before they are going to close her up and finish up the surgery, they inject that good blood straight into the area where they just operated on. This helps to speed up the recovery process. She is having a PRP in her right hip (the operated hip), and also in her left hip, since she has the same injury in that hip too.

Shae has tiny veins, and so the nurse who took her blood for the PRP (aka Shae's very own vampire), had a hard time getting the blood out and it took forever. It was a very slow process, but Shae was a trooper and held in there.

But the best was still yet to come, when Shae had to get the lovely Epidural. When I had my hip surgery, they only gave a nerve block, but now they give an epidural and it makes a huge difference because she will be completely numb from the waist down until 2am tomorrow morning. This will help keep her out of pain, and not too drugged.

They made my mom and I leave the room in order to give her the epidural, but we could hear everything that was going on and Shae did a great job. They did give her some magic stuff to take the nerves away and to prevent her from feeling anything while they gave her the epidural. When we went back into the room, Shae was without a doubt Lucy in the sky with diamonds.

She even asked me, if she would feel this good when she woke up from surgery. I told her that they will give her even more "feel good" meds after surgery, and she definitely liked the way that sounded because she just smiled ear to ear.

Here's a picture of Shae with her anesthesiologist, and of course with her in La La land after the epidural.

And then after all the hours of waiting during pre-op from 11:30am until 3:35 this afternoon. She was finally wheeled away for surgery.
